  • Regarding section 7.7: Matlab/Octave codes from 15 February class:
  • Regarding section 8.5: Carabiner failure strength is reported by a "3-sigma" standard. That is, the manufacturer claims that the measured force which breaks such carabiners is a normally-distributed random variable with a mean value which is three standard deviations above the value the company reports. There are many failure modes for a carabiner:
  • Regarding the block-stacking problem, we saw that the maximum overhang of N single-stacked blocks is proportional to the Nth partial sum of the harmonic series. The overhang can grow logarithmically with N.
    • But see this 2007 mathematical paper which shows that one can make an even larger overhang by allowing multi-stacking.
